Built by Muslims, for Muslims - we're on a mission to make halal food discovery and community connection easier for everyone.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a mission-driven marketing extern to help us reach more Muslims across NYC and build a thriving community around HalalMappers.

Perfect for: Marketing, business, or communications students looking to make an impact while building real-world skills. Muslim applicants especially encouraged (though not required).

What You'll Do

Content Creation & Social Media (50%)

Create 2-3 Instagram Reels per week showcasing halal restaurants and Islamic events
Design graphics for Instagram posts and Stories using Canva
Write engaging captions that drive website traffic and community engagement
Monitor Instagram/TikTok trends and adapt them for our Muslim audience
Cross-post content to TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter

Community Engagement (30%)

Respond to comments and DMs on Instagram (30-60 min/day)
Share HalalMappers in relevant Reddit threads (r/AskNYC, r/nyc, r/islam)
Engage with Muslim food bloggers and influencers for potential partnerships
Help moderate our Discord/community channels (future)

Growth & Analytics (20%)

Track weekly metrics (Instagram growth, website traffic, engagement rates)
Test different content formats and report on what's working
Suggest new growth strategies based on data
Help organize virtual or in-person community meetups

What We're Looking For

Must Have

Currently enrolled in college or a recent graduate (for externship eligibility)
Strong social media skills - you live on Instagram/TikTok/Reddit and understand what performs
Excellent writing skills - you can write engaging captions that convert
Self-starter mentality - comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
Passion for serving the Muslim community (or genuine interest in the mission)
10-15 hours per week availability

Nice to Have

Experience creating Reels or TikToks (personal account counts!)
Basic Canva or graphic design skills
Understanding of Muslim culture and NYC halal food scene
Marketing coursework or previous internship experience

Location

Remote (based anywhere)
Bonus if you're in NYC

Time Commitment

10-15 hours per week

5-7 hours: Content creation (Reels, graphics, captions)
2-3 hours: Community engagement (responding to comments/DMs)
1-2 hours: Weekly strategy call with founder
1-2 hours: Analytics & reporting
1 hour: Team sync (if we have multiple externs)

Duration

3-6 months preferred
Can extend based on performance and interest
Start date: Flexible (January-February 2025)
