  • *Overview**

The Kitchener Indoor Recreation Complex (KIRC) currently under construction at RBJ Schlegel Park will be the city’s largest and newest indoor sport and recreation destination for families and visitors. With $144 million invested in this development, the facility, which will open in the summer of 2026, will be home to a wide range of indoor sport amenities, including a FIFA-sized indoor turf field, an indoor aquatics centre with two pools, an elevated walking track, an indoor cricket batting cage and a variety of multi-purpose community rooms for events, parties and rentals.

We are looking for a creative, results-driven, talented individual with proven communications and event planning experience to join the Community Services team in readying KIRC for the anticipated opening in summer of 2026. Reporting to the Manager, Customer Experience and Solutions, the Communications and Marketing Associate (KIRC) will work closely with the project team, members of the senior management team, and key staff across the organization to lead projects and strategies supporting the operation and opening of the KIRC facility.

  • *Major initiatives will include, but are not limited to**:
  • Leading the completion and implementation of a comprehensive communications plan for the project.
  • Writing content to support external and communications for our website, socials media, updates to key stakeholders and staff, speaking notes for presentations and events.
  • Taking pictures and videos to support communications tactics.
  • Drafting media releases.
  • Overseeing the development of a branding template for use in the new facility.
  • Plan and execute a variety of activities intended to build and maintain a positive and engaged team culture amongst members.
  • Plan and execute a number of change management initiatives for staff who will be working out of the facility once it opens.
  • Support training and onboarding plans for new KIRC employees.
  • Planning and executing events to engage team and community members.
  • Lead a cross-corporate team of staff in the planning and execution of a community celebration event to market the opening of the facility, including onsite broadcasting and communication support for formal speaking portion.

  • Leads the collaborative, team development of proactive, well researched tactical communications and marketing plans for the KIRC project.
  • Develops and implements tactical communications and marketing plans including: conducting market research, attending meetings with customers, providing general communications and marketing advice, input and insights, leading group discussions and working with customers to understand and respond to their priorities and challenges.
  • Co-ordinates and oversees the timely implementation and production of all communications and marketing collateral (traditional and online) for the KIRC project.
  • Co-ordinates, books and reconciles media buys (radio, TV and print) as required within tactical communications and marketing plans.
  • Evaluates the progress, implementation and success of communications and marketing plans and materials on an ongoing basis and provides updates and advice on potential responses to customers and management when required.
  • Monitors and provide advice about communications and marketing budgets for specific projects.
  • Monitors traditional and online communications/social media channels for public comment about initiatives and projects and share this information with appropriate customers and management staff.
  • Researches and keeps up to date with emerging trends, ideas approaches and tools in the communications and marketing industry.
  • Works collaboratively with all the KIRC project team to achieve defined and measurable objectives including act
