Mandela Barnes is running for Governor of Wisconsin to reject the Washington Way and deliver results the Wisconsin Way. That means standing up to Trump, lowering costs, and fighting for every Wisconsin family. As a community organizer, state representative, and Wisconsin’s first Black Lieutenant Governor, Mandela has the experience and grit this moment demands.
We’re looking for a bold Digital Director who isn’t afraid to take risks and believes deeply in the power of storytelling. They must be strategic, inventive, and highly collaborative to lead a talented internal team and consultants, and oversee strategy, social content, digital fundraising, video production, and more. The ideal candidate can independently tackle complex projects, execute a long-term vision, and turn core campaign messages into persuasive, high-impact digital content that not only mobilizes supporters, but also expands our base. They should be excited to test fresh ideas, build relationships with creatives, break through with standout fundraising copy, and partner across departments to reach voters in new and unexpected ways.
Responsibilities
The Digital Director will work closely with the Campaign Manager to help shape the campaign’s message, drive voter engagement statewide, and optimize the digital fundraising program.
Strategy and Team Leadership
- Create and implement a digital campaign strategy
- Manage and support a digital team and consultants
- Provide guidance to the campaign on emerging trends, risks, and platforms
Content & Communications
- Oversee all digital platforms to ensure they are authentic to the candidate and reflect the broader campaign strategy, including the campaign's website, social media ( X/Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Bluesky), and email/SMS program
- Lead a digital storytelling program that turns complex policy into compelling content
- Work closely with the communications team to create a rapid-response digital operation
- Supervise the creation of top-tier digital materials—including videos and graphic designs—ensuring they are optimized for each platform
Digital Fundraising
Work in tandem with the digital fundraising firm to:
- Produce fundraising copy that creates engagement, not spam
- Perform rigorous testing and optimization, list segmentation, and email list maintenance
- Oversee goals and calendars that align with the campaign’s priorities and create organic list growth
- Design engaging digital and print graphics (stickers, social graphics, placards)
Analytics and targeting
- Analyze digital performance metrics and trends to communicate regularly to senior campaign staff
- Remain in compliance with all state regulations related to disclosures and data privacy
Qualifications
- 2+ election cycles of experience managing digital communications and/or digital organizing for political campaigns, elected officials, or an equivalent
- Strong writing skills and the ability to translate messaging across platforms
- Experience working in electoral politics or at a firm that works on campaigns – fast-paced environments that require managing multiple projects at once
- Proven track record of social media content that has engaged significant audiences
- Exceptional political judgment with a good eye for detail
- Experience with digital fundraising, including a management role
- Strong team leadership and management skills, with both staff and consultants
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, video editing software, NGP/VAN, ActBlue, ActionKit, advertising platforms, and other digital tools
- Willing to work early mornings and late nights, including weekends
- Willing to relocate to Wisconsin
