The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) is a mission-driven non-profit dedicated to ensuring the future of elk, other wildlife, their habitat and our hunting heritage. Since our founding in 1984, we have helped conserve nearly one square mile of elk country every day. In partnership with others, we have conserved or enhanced more than 9.1 million acres, including improving public access to 1.6 million acres. Our impact will extend to 10 million acres by 2030.

We want to tell those stories along with ones that highlight our work in public access, habitat stewardship, wildlife research and hunting heritage. Our mission projects form the basis of compelling content that engages a broad audience of hunters, conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts—and we want to stoke that interest to grow involvement in our vital work for elk and other big game. RMEF is seeking a Digital Editor to help deliver engaging, high-quality storytelling across our digital platforms, social media channels and email campaigns. This role collaborates closely with RMEF departments and volunteers, freelance writers, federal and state agencies, and industry partners to communicate and promote RMEF projects, initiatives and campaigns in the digital space.

Qualifications Include

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or experience and demonstrated ability in journalism, digital communications or marketing, or related field.
  • Experience in creating and editing digital and social media content for a professional publication, website or commercially successful brand
  • Strong short-form content writing and editing skills, as well as SEO and keyword research experience

Location: This position is based at RMEF’s Headquarters office in Missoula, Montana and requires fulltime on-site work.

Job Summary

The Digital Editor works closely with department leadership and relevant departments to support delivery of engaging, quality storytelling content on RMEF’s digital platforms, social media sites and email campaigns. The ideal candidate will have strong short-form content writing and editing skills, as well as SEO and keyword research experience. With the primary objective of furthering RMEF’s mission, the Digital Editor will work with RMEF departments and volunteers, freelance writers, federal and state agencies, and industry representatives to communicate and promote RMEF projects, initiatives and campaigns in the digital and social media spaces. The Editor serves as a member of, and supports, a multidepartment team charged with executing RMEF’s digital communication and marketing strategies.

Essential Functions

  • Work with RMEF staff, volunteers, members and partners, as well as freelance contributors and other content creators, to produce, edit, and format content for RMEF digital platforms and email as directed.
  • Work with supervisor and relevant departments to produce digital storytelling content, primarily short form, that emphasize and promote key RMEF mission projects, utilizing SEO and best digital practices to reach and engage a relevant audience. Develop, and manage as directed, a slate of digital content that furthers RMEF mission and goals.
  • Coordinate with department leadership and relevant departments to write copy and develop social media content promoting RMEF and driving engagement across all platforms. Assist with developing messaging and approach to both organic and sponsored social media content, as well as production of such content.
  • Identify subject and content trends within the digital and social spaces, leveraging them to further engagement while maintaining RMEF brand standards and expectations for quality.
  • Stay abreast of social and political issues influencing big game conservation and hunting, as well as developments within the hunting, shooting and outdoor industry, and utilize this knowledge to suggest content for digital and social platforms news that is of benefit to RMEF members and supporters.
  • In collaboration with department leadership, optimize Bugle digital edition and supplement print pieces with additional content to achieve a media-rich, interactive experience for users.
  • Analyze performance metrics across RMEF’s digital and social platforms. Present these insights to relevant department leadership and recommend assignments that improve content effectiveness and optimize storytelling approaches for higher engagement and mission impact.
  • Ensure both existing and new digital content is using SEO best practices.
  • Edit, update and post content to RMEF.org as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Of Others

This position supervises the Social Media & Content Specialist position.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of and belief in RMEF's mission, goals and policies, including the biological, sociological and political elements that shape them.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including command of grammar and Associated Press style.
  • Demonstrated skill in creating and editing digital and social media content, especially short- and long-form articles, as well as optimizing digital and social media content for best engagement.
  • Proficient with SEO tools, content management systems, social media management applications and analytic platforms.
  • Ability to develop content strategies and align content with organizational goals.
  • Thorough understanding of popular social media platforms, as well as influential personalities and brands in the hunting and outdoor industry.
  • Understanding of digital marketing practices.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, set and manage priorities, and meet deadlines. Ability to set and fulfill short- and long-term goals within specified timeframes.
  • Must demonstrate a personal interest in and commitment to hunting.
  • Strong commitment to collaborating with others and fostering a positive team environment.

Physical Demands

The employee must sit or stand for long periods of time; use a computer terminal; reach forward and to the side; bend from both standing and sitting position; and lift items weighing various pounds. Some travel may be required including overnight stays. Evening and weekend work may occasionally be necessary.
